Nissan Maxima dresses up in black for its 40th birthday

Nissan North America has revealed the 40th Anniversary Edition of its range-topping Maxima sedan, complete with special décor and plenty of nice extras thrown into the deal.

The first-gen Maxima emerged based on the Datsun Bluebird 810 in the United States back in 1980. The current – eighth – generation has been around since 2015.

The limited series uses the top trim called Platinum as the starting point. It replaces such chrome details as the grille, trunk lid inlay, badges, 19-inch wheels and roof with black ones that create a compelling contrast against a dark grey body. The cabin makes use of Bordeaux red leather with red stitching and houses a dashboard with white background. Rear seats are now heated like the front ones, but the rest of the equipment stays stock. This means adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane control and all-around view cameras.

Powering the series is a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 good for 304 hp (227 kW) paired up with a CVT and all-wheel drive. The car measures 4,897 mm (16.07 ft.) long and has a wheelbase spanning 2,776 mm (9.11 ft.).

It is official that the 40th Anniversary Edition is going to be limited, but the specific production quantity remains unannounced, as do the prices. The standard Nissan Maxima starts from U.S. $34,450, while the Platinum trim will set you back $41,840 plus taxes and shipment.

Rumor has it that an all-electric successor to the Nissan Maxima line is coming up stylized after the IMs Concept revealed last year.
