Nissan has revised the engine range for its North American Rogue SUV known in most other countries as the X-Trail. The old 2.5-liter non-turbo mill is gone, and a new 1.5-liter blown three-cylinder takes its place in the MY2022 lineup.
As a result, the crossover gains both power and torque while consuming less fuel, Nissan says. The old engine produced 181 hp (184 PS / 135 kW) and 245 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque, while the new one makes 201 hp (204 PS / 150 kW) and up to 305 Nm (225 lb-ft) of torque. No sprint time are provided, but the improvement should be noticeable.
Combined-cycle fuel consumption reportedly went down from 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers (30 MPG) to 7.1 liters (33 MPG). To achieve this, the engine uses variable compression ratios in a way similar to that of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder mill found under the hood of the Infiniti QX50. It also benefits from low-friction machined parts that should extend its lifetime significantly.
Apart from the engine, the 2022 Rogue for the USA gets updates to its Xtronic CVT: dual oil pumps will ensure smooth switching in different driving modes and enable expanding the gear ratios by 17 percent.
Sales will begin on December 2, 2021, with the new version priced just $650-$750 above the old one.
On a related note, the Nissan X-Trail for China uses a similar three-pot, too, but that one is a range extender hybrid. A similar spec is scheduled to arrive in Europe next summer.
