Nissan Sentra heading to the USA with a single 2.0 V4 & CVT

Nissan has released details about the upcoming new generation of its Sentra subcompact that will debut at the 2019 LA Auto Show in late November.

This new generation will boil down to a mild redesign of the China-only Nissan Sylphy (depicted in our gallery and video), which was launched last spring.

It is expected that the U.S. Sentra will ship with only one engine, a two-liter, four-cylinder naturally aspirated mill rated at 151 hp (113 kW) and 196 Nm (145 lb-ft), paired with a continuously variable transmission.

The current-gen Sentra ships with a choice between two basic powertrains in the States. One is a 1.8-liter non-turbo V4 available in two variants: 132 hp / 98 kW, 174 Nm / 128 lb-ft and six-speed manual transmission, and 126 hp / 94 kW, 170 Nm / 125 lb-ft and CVT. The other one is a 1.6 TDI rated at 191 hp (143 kW) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft), connected to the same kind of CVT (but you may still opt for the stick shift if you order the Nismo trim).

It should be noted that the Sentra which is currently on the U.S. market is Nissan’s second best-selling car there, with 213,046 units sold in 2018 alone. It is only second to the Rogue/Rogue Sport SUV series (a.k.a. X-Trail/Qashqai in some markets), which sold 412,110 last year.
