2020 Nissan Titan XD debuts with better tech, revised engines

The standard Nissan Titan pickup truck has received a mid-generational refresh in September. Today, its big brother – the Titan XD – follows suit with lots of new and interesting features.

The regular Titan has 1620 lbs, or 735 kg, of cargo capacity, whereas the XD has 2,470 lbs (1,120 kg). It also sports a longer, stronger frame, a larger bed and a higher-set cab.

Like its younger sibling, the facelifted XD sports new bumpers, radiator grille and LED taillights. The truck bed lighting is now also LED-based, and higher trims come with diode headlights.

Inside, the instrument panel is now represented by the 7-inch digital display that most of Nissan light passenger cars currently ship with. In the most basic trim version, the multimedia display is up from 7 to 8 inches across, and in higher trims, it is up to 9. The WLAN hotspot now supports up to seven simultaneously connected devices. The seats take advantage of Nissan’s signature Zero Gravity tech, like in the Murano SUV. This mainly means optimal softness and body weight distribution.

The Titan XD now ships with a safety system package in all versions. Options include panoramic roof and extra off-road instruments.

The engine range has been substantially revised as well. The Cummins turbo diesel engine is no longer available, the 5.6-liter gasoline V8 has been upped to 406 hp (302 kW) and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque, and the seven-speed automatic transmission has been replaced with a better nine-speed one.

Overall, the Titan XD range has been considerably trimmed down and no longer includes Single Cab and Double Cab versions. Rear-wheel drive has also been ditched.

Nissan says it had to revise the lineup because of failing sales. Only around 50,000 Titans found new owners in 2018 in the USA, compared to 909,000 Ford F-Series and 586,000 Chevrolet Silverados.

Sales of the facelifted Nissan Titan XD begin in early 2020.
