Nissan has shared photos of a Z-series racecar developed by its Nismo division. Called the Z GT500, it will phase out the GT-R Nismo in 2022.
The track weapon is designed for participation in the Super GT racing series of Japan. It comes with a two-liter turbocharged engine rated no higher than 650 PS (641 hp / 479 kW). It also weighs no more than 1,030 kilograms (2,270 pounds) including the liquids and the pilot. Exact numbers remain to be revealed.
The photos show an impressively advanced aerodynamic kit with a prominent front splitter, widened arches, and a large rear wing.
The newcomer will compete against the likes of the Toyota GR Supra GT500 and the Honda NSX GT500 in the Super GT series. Throughout its 13-year-long history, the GT-R racecar has scored five championship victories.
In case you missed it, Nissan unveiled a production sports car named simply the Z in August. It had a retro appearance not unlike that of the Z Proto Concept and came powered by a 3.0-liter V6 rated at 405 PS (399 hp / 298 kW). The Toyota Supra was named among the principal rivals of the new Z.
