Opel previews a futuristic EV with a foldaway steering wheel

The Opel Experimental is a battery-powered design and tech preview that the company plans on bringing to the IAA Mobility Munich this September. In the meantime, here are some new details about the concept car.

The company says it is based on a ‘modern Stellantis BEV’ platform. This probably refers to the North American corporation’s architecture known as the STLA.

Design-wise, the prototype has a removable steering wheel that can automatically retract when not needed. Opel also specifically highlights the complete absence of chrome in the design, saying that vivid graphics does a much better job highlighting the sporty proportions of the coupe-like SUV.

The interior is described as ‘roomy enough’ with ‘a bare minimum of design elements.’ An augmented reality system substitutes for the lack of traditional displays, but how it is supposed to work is unknown.
