After showing us a few sketchy teasers of its upcoming 2022 Astra model, Opel has now followed up with a handful of high-definition photos.
The pre-production cars still haven’t shed the camo wrap, but the tests are nearing completion. The company says it tested the new Astra on proving grounds, beyond the Arctic Circle, at its top speed, and in a weather chamber.
Interestingly enough, it was also subjected to a wading trial. According to Opel, all models must withstand begin driven through water at least a quarter of a meter (10 inches) deep.
The newcomer shares most of its tech and equipment with the Peugeot 308, as clearly evidenced by its overall proportions and the doorframes in particular. It still has an Opel Vizor front with LED headlights included in the standard spec – like that of the new Mokka. Inside, the main highlight probably comes in the form of Pure Panel, a dash panel consisting of two screens with hardly any physical controls in view.
Riding on the Stellantis EMP2 chassis, the car uses the same engines as the Peugeot 308. This means a 1.2-liter gasoline three-pot available in 110 and 130 PS variants (108 and 128 hp / 81 and 96 kW, respectively), a 1.5-liter four-pot turbo diesel, and two hybrids based on the same 1.6-liter turbo-four gasoline mill. The part-electric versions will ship with 180 and 225 PS (178 and 222 hp; 132 and 165 kW) under the hood. An all-electric version should also go on sale later on.
Stay tuned for the premiere coming soon.
