Open has resurrected the Frontera nameplate to put in on a new crossover SUV coming to replace the Crossland. It will be based on a Stellantis platform and share the powertrains with other Stellantis Group cars, but the German brand promises us a particularly spacious interior and state-of-the-art technology. Buyers will be choosing between all-electric and mild-hybrid for the powertrain. The launch date is still unannounced.
The SUV looks in line with Opel’s current design philosophy, but with some notable exceptions. Compared to the latest Mokka, it sports more reserved, geometrically simple lines. It has a nearly horizontal hood and nearly upright c-pillars. Considering these subtle visual cues and the legacy of the Frontera name, we wouldn’t be surprised if it went on sale as a “rugged” soft-roader.
The trunk volume can vary between 460 and 1,600 liters (16.24 and 56.5 cubic feet) depending on whether the seats are folded down. It’s already official that the rear bench seat back can fold down completely and that the car comes pre-equipped with a trunk organizer and roof rails rated for 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of luggage. The interior houses two 10-inch displays, an eco-friendly trim and special ergonomic features, like a dedicated space for convenient storing of devices larger than the average smartphone.
All powertrain specifics remain to be announced.
