Opel promises to electrify its SUV lineup, but do it slowly

Opel has revealed what future holds in store for its Crossland and Grandland SUVs. Both models will go into their next generation in 2024, but while the former will offer a choice between ICE and EV powertrains, the latter will go all-electric.

That said, the company only plans to complete its EV transition by 2028, so there is still time for the more conservatively minded buyers to decide what to vote with their wallets for.

Both the Crossland and the Grandland debuted six years ago. They were based on different architectures, and everything indicates that it continues to be the case. The Crossland utilizes a platform known as CMP in order to take advantage of a wide variety of drivetrains. In its next generation, it is expected to become larger and gain access to previously unavailable electronic assists and features.

As for the Grandland (see video), its becoming an EV implies that it no longer needs to be subject to any ICE-specific platform limitation. As such, Opel may choose to build it on the more up-to-date STLA Medium chassis, the one underpinning the latest Peugeot 3008. Having said that, it is only our assumption at this point.

Since 2028, Opel plans to bring EVs and only EVs to the markets across Europe. The official press release states that the company plans to have 15 electrified models in its portfolio by the end of the current year.
