Opel Insignia gets a new, cleaner engine

German car manufacturer Opel has developed a new engine for its second-generation Insignia family car, which complies with the strictest environmental standards of the EU.

According to representatives of the brand, the engine in question is a 1.6-liter turbocharged unit that produces 200 hp (150 kW) and over 270 Nm (200 lb·ft) of torque. It comes equipped with a special soot-based gasoline particulate filter which is now obligatory for Euro-6 compliance.

The same engine will also become available with the performance versions of insignia (Country Tourer and Grand Sport). The manufacturer quotes the same acceleration and fuel consumption data for all three, though. Reportedly, the engine accelerates the vehicle 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) in 7.7 seconds, consumes 5.5 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers on a highway and 8.5 liters in an urban environment.

For our British readers, this would mean 51.3 MPG and 33 MPG, accordingly. For those in the United States, it is 42.8 MPG and 27.7 MPG.

The refreshed Opel Insignia can be purchased for €35,000 and above that.
