Car spotters have sighted early development mules of the new Opel Mokka X two and even three years ago, but it hasn’t been until now that the final production car went out for a test drive.
The disguise prevents us from seeing much, but the car appears to resemble the Opel GT X Experimental Concept shown two years ago (see video for details). Compared to the current-gen Mokka, the newcomer will be marginally longer (4.28 -> 4.3 meters) with a slightly larger wheelbase (2.55 -> 2.65 meters).
This happens because of the switch from the outdated GM Gamma II platform to a new PSA-designed architecture called CMP (EMP1)/e-CMP. The Peugeot 208 and 2008, the Opel Corsa, and the DS 3 Crossback utilize the same chassis design. The drive invariably stays on the front axle in this configuration.
As for the engine range, we believe the new Mokka X might inherit the units of the Peugeot 2008, namely the 1.2-liter turbo-three, a 1.5-lkiter TDI, and an all-electric powertrain rated at 136 hp (100 kW) and 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque. Then again, this is mere speculation at this time.
On one final note, the Mokka X might as well shed its redundant ‘X’ suffix and become known as simply the Mokka once again. We will know for sure later this year, when the car celebrates its official premiere.
