2nd-gen Opel Mokka switches platform, loses weight and AWD

Opel has unveiled the second generation of its Mokka crossover SUV. The newcomer is based on the CMP architecture by PSA Group and is shorter than the original.

Whereas the first-gen Mokka was 4,275 mm (14.03 feet) long, the new one only measures 4,150 mm (13.62 ft.) long. It is also marginally wider (10mm / 0.2”) and has 2,557 mm (8.39 ft.) of wheelbase. Wheel sizes start from 18 inches, and LED headlights are included in all specs.

Thanks to the new chassis, the SUV weighs 120 kg (265 lbs) less than its predecessor while reportedly being 30% more rigid. As a downside, it loses the optional all-wheel drive system.

Inside, the so-called Opel Pure Panel brings together the 12-inch digital dash screen and the multimedia screen which can be 7 or 10 inches across. Adaptive cruise control and road marking recognition complement the feature list from now on.

The battery-powered Mokka-e packs the same motor as the Corsa-e (134 hp / 100 kW, 260 Nm / 192 lb-ft). It hits the speed limit at 150 km/h (93 mph) and draws its power from a 50-kWh battery, which gives it 322 kilometers (200 miles) of WLTP-rated range. The standard charger is rated for 11kW, but you can connect to a 100kW station outlet to replenish 80% of charge within just 30 minutes.

The production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2020 and the sales in early 2021, Opel reports. The electric Mokka-e will be the first to hit the market with a €35,000 preliminary price tag, and the more affordable gasoline/diesel modifications will follow later.
