Peugeot stops production of 308 GTi over environmental concerns

Environment Action Programme, a set of rules and strategies which aims to reduce the impact industry has on the surrounding nature, is in full stride in Europe right now, forcing some car manufacturers to research and adopt low-emission engines or halt their business processes until a solution is found. Peugeot has recently fallen victim of the latter.

The automotive giant will have to redesign the turbocharged engine its 308 GTi performance hatchback comes with, as it no longer meets the increasingly strict emission standards. Engineers said they would need five months, give or take, to come up with an optimal design, which means that production is being put on halt until October 2018.

Among other things, Peugeot is going to have to develop a new PM filter design. The manufacturer claims it will not affect performance or torque in any way.

The ‘cleaner’ version of the hatchback will likely debut at the 2019 Paris International Motor Show alongside the new 508 Wagon and the Peugeot 2008 crossover.

Great Britain is perhaps the forerunner in this race for clear, emission-free skies. The country plans to ban internal combustion engine vehicles completely in 20 years.
