A respectable automotive news publication claims Peugeot will soon introduce a hybrid modification of its 508, titled the 508 PHEV.
The latest Peugeot 508 generation debuted this winter. The engineers have carried the car over to a new chassis, reworked the suspension and automatic transmission, added a night vision system and made a number of further improvements.
The company will outfit the vehicle with the same hybrid drivetrain the DS 7 Crossback E-Tense ships with, consisting of a 1.6L turbo engine, an electric motor and a 48V starter-generator.
Rumors persist that the turbocharged engine will produce around 200 hp (150 kW), with the electric engine contributing another 100 hp (75 kW). The vehicle will allegedly offer 50 kilometers (30 miles) of all-electric driving range.
The battery block will be situated under the trunk compartment, thus not affecting its total volume. Hybrid-powered SUVs 3008 and 5008 will also switch to this battery layout later.
Prices and availability of the new Peugeot 508 PHEV remain a matter of speculation.
