Polestar designs a smartphone to go with its EVs

Geely-owned electric car brand Polestar will release its own smartphone model in China by the time its coupe-SUV named 4 reaches the market, CNBC reports quoting company CEO Thomas Ingenlath.

The reason is simple: the phone and the infotainment system of the car will be using the same operating system for a seamless and complete synchronization between the two. Per Ingenlath, there are still some technical hurdles to overcome, but the company will make every effort to release a highly compatible device for the Polestar 4.

Responsible for the development is Meizu, a tech company also owned by Geely. Both the phone and the infotainment will run on an operating system known as the Meizu FlyMe, but only in China. In Europe, the car will go on sale with an OS from Google.

Ingenlath emphasizes that the smartphone will be a pricey premium model. Funnily enough, that means it may end up being the first premium product on Meizu lineup, because the company has only produced low-end smartphones so far.

The Polestar 4 debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show. Advertised as a coupe-like SUV, it looks more like a high-riding hatchback and lacks a rear window. On the upside, it packs a host of modern driving assists and has up to 544 PS (536 hp / 400 kW) of motor power. Sales in China are scheduled for late autumn; the phone will reach retail in December.
