Back when Polestar previewed its hardtop named Six last year, it said the production would be capped at just 500 units. Rewind to the present day, and company CEO Thomas Ingenlath has admitted that the sheer customer interest towards the model led to the company reconsidering that target.
The idea to make a limited-run convertible began with the Polestar o2 Concept. According to the company, it was met with general praise and prompted the execs to think about producing something like it en masse.
The Polestar 6 was designed on the same architecture as the Polestar 5 and given a similar powertrain. Composed of two electric motors, it delivers a combined 884 PS (872 hp / 650 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels, letting the car go from nothing to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds. Despite its supercar-like parameters, Polestar called the 6 ‘an everyday driver.’
A limited production batch was announced last fall, but Polestar apparently didn’t expect all 500 units to be sold out within a week from the announcement. The company is now considering launching a second batch – that is, if it gets enough orders for one. The exclusivity value might drop, though, and it is unclear whether those who pre-ordered the droptop for its rarity alone would get any kind of compensation.
In any case, the production will not begin until 2026.
