Video: 819-PS Pontiac Trans Am vs. 608-PS BMW 3 Series

Would a half-a-century-old Pontiac Trans Am stand a chance against a BMW E36? Don’t bother to answer: both have been tuned through the roof, so whoever wins is now largely determined by who gets the better start.

The elderly Pontiac enjoys a large-scale makeover based on modern components, which most notably sees its stock engine replaced with a 6.5-liter LSX V8 rated at 820 PS (809 hp / 603 kW). A four-speed dogbox drives the rear wheels, and the interior is sufficiently stripped out for the whole car to weigh just 1,435 kg (3,165 lbs).

One might think the E36 would not stand a chance against such an opponent, but the reality is more interesting. Powering the Bavarian coupe is a 7.3-liter V8 capable of 608 PS (600 hp / 447 kW), which drives the rear axle through a sequential transmission. The curb weight is even more impressive at 1,225 kg (2,700 lbs).

Be sure to watch the video! If you need a reason, consider that it took three attempts to determine the winner.
