The Porsche Museum will soon host the Colours of Speed – 50 Years of the 917 show featuring a modern interpretation of the famous 917 Concept racecar. The prototype vehicle will be exhibited at the same booth with 10 classical Le Mans 917s.
The new supercar is not the only treat Porsche has in store for the visitors of the show. The company will also unveil a completely restored 917-001 Concept racecar, the first 917 to have left the garage and also the one to have won the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans competing in the Group 4.
By the way, the original Porsche 917 came out exactly fifty years ago, on March 12, 1969.
The restored racecar was also featured at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show a few days ago. A spokesperson for the company said it took the engineer team over a year to get the vehicle back into mint shape. Engineers from the Porsche Museum, company’s current and former partners, and ex-employees from Zuffenhausen and Weissach have all joined forces in this large-scale project.
Some parts, including the front and rear body panels, had to be printed on a 3D printer. The team has also succeeded in recreating the rear space-frame of the prototype vehicle.
The Colours of Speed – 50 Years of the 917 show will feature a total of 14 racecars. Fun fact: if you add up their engine performance numbers, the grand total will stop just a little way short of 7,800 horsepower (5,800 kW).
