Rust-eaten Porsche 356 Coupe may cost $82,500 with a bit of polish

Okay, maybe a lot of polish. Anyway, an ad was recently posted on an online car marketplace offering a 67-year-old Porsche 356 Coupe for as much as U.S. $82,500. This is $16,800 above the new Porsche Cayenne in its most basic trim. So where’s the catch?

The catch is, the car being offered is a completely and painstakingly restored vehicle and not the rust bucket it had once been. Its latest owner bought it in the 1970s, when it was still a reasonably usable bluish-grey sports car. As time went by, however, it was gradually accumulating rust – up until the paint peeled off completely, and the car lost all of its badges and the taillights.

The interior also degraded quite a bit, needing a full overhaul, and so did the engine and some chassis components.

An Australian blogger took the car in for restoration and spent a year and a half bringing it back to top condition. He filmed the whole process and edited it into a short 4-minute video that you can enjoy now.

Restored Porsche 356s usually fetch around U.S. $200,000 - $250,000, with certain examples priced as high as $725,000 (depends on the model year).
