An auction set to be held in California in August will feature an exotic Glöckler-Porsche 356 Carrera 1500, a racecar built in Germany 67 years ago.
Walter Glöckler, Frankfurt-based seller of Porsche and VW cars and a motorsports enthusiast, built a number of unique track cars from spare parts at his disposal. This 356 Carrera 1500 was his seventh work, and he built it to take part in the 1954 Mille Miglia race.
Glöckler began with a stock 356 (see video) and remade it from the ground up, changing the front end, cutting see-through sections in the doors and the roof, widening the rear end of the greenhouse for better visibility, and outfitting the rear fenders with fin-like attachments.
Partnering up with Porsche enabled the tuner to source a state-of-the-art engine for his project, a 1.5-liter mill rated at 110 PS (108 hp / 81 kW). Porsche only launched this engine in production a year later, with an update of its 356 Carrera.
Unfortunately, Glöckler never managed to finish the car before the Mille Miglia race. It did participate in one other competition, though – the Liege-Rome-Liege Marathon. Piloted by Glöckler’s cousin Helm, it encountered technical issues and had to drop out of the race.
