Renee Brinkerhoff has shared news about her charity-driven rally raid: on December 5, 2021, she will drive her venerable 1956 Porsche 356 on tracks and skis instead of wheels through the Antarctic continent, aiming to cover a distance of 356 miles (573 km).
Later this month, the Valkyrie Racing team will travel from Chile to the Union Glacier. From there, the talented driver will drive towards the South Pole, but will turn around approximately halfway. Preparing the car for its most extreme challenge by far took over 18 months – the longest on its record (it had been tuned many times before).
Brinkerhoff had originally hoped to be able to make the trip in 2020, but an emerging coronavirus pandemic put a stop to those plans. By finally visiting the Antarctic, she plans to wrap up her epic international rally tour across all continents that started four years ago.
The North American driver is as old as her Porsche 356. Throughout her 10 years of racing career, she has visited 18 countries and covered over 30,000 kilometers (18,600+ miles). Her rally debut was La Carrera Panamericana.
By doing what she does, Brinkerhoff aims to attract people’s attention to slave trading and child trafficking in particular, and help charities raise enough money to fight the remaining epicenters of such trade. So far, she has succeeded in raising around $450,000.
