Street-legal conversion of a Porsche racecar crops up on sale

A 1994 Porsche 962CR modified by racing driver Vernon Schuppan to be usable on public roads is looking for a new owner in the United States. Given the legendary status of the model number 962 and the fact that only six such conversions were made, it may end up fetching a seven-digit sum in USD.

The chassis design of the Porsche 962 has proven to be rather successful, bringing it numerous victories in all kinds of international motorsport events attended by the manufacturer’s own racing team and private teams. A total of 91 such cars had been produced from 1984 through 1991, 75 of them landing in private hands.

Team Schuppan also used to drive these in the late ‘80s, after which Vernon Schuppan reckoned it would be nice to retrofit the 962 to be street-legal while retaining all of its core racecar qualities. Suspension springs and shocks were replaced for a softer ride, a basic AC was installed and the interior was sprinkled with a modest amount of leather.

The engine – a 3.3-liter flat-six turbo – was allowed to stay stock and hit the rear wheels with around 600 PS (592 hp / 441 kW) through a five-speed manual transmission. Since the conversion project was co-funded by Japanese investors, decals with Japanese hieroglyphs can be found throughout the cabin.
