Video: Exotic Porsche hits a snowy mountain trail

Porsche has posted the next video episode telling the history of its unique racecar, the GT1-98. The endurance racer that won the Le Mans marathon in 1998 hit a snowy, icy track in Rocky Mountains, USA. When the show was over, the driver admitted he felt like it was a ballet dance more than a race.

Porsche put the car to the test before the opening of the F.A.T Ice Race, a winter motorsports event formerly held in Austria under the name “GP Ice Race”. It has now migrated to the United States and has been expanded to include all kinds of demo drives, show exhibits and other popularity-boosting attractions.

As for the GT1-98, it was carefully delivered to Aspen by the employees of the Porsche Museum. The 550-horsepower (410-kilowatt) car received a set of winter tires and a slight ground clearance boost for the run. The engine ended up with a heating setup like the one used in the 919 Hybrid to withstand the low temperatures.

Stephane Ortelli, 53, the winner of the original Le Mans race in 1998, was specifically invited to the USA for this demo drive.
