The Porsche 718 will soon be trimmed down to for financial viability reasons, losing the Cayman T, Cayman GT4 and Spyder versions in the process, Autoevolution reports.
According to the website, the dealerships have already received letters to that effect: none of the three versions mentioned above is available for ordering anymore.
The Cayman T joined the lineup five years ago as a driver-focused sports car. The more expensive GT4 and Spider variants followed a year after that. They utilized the same naturally aspirated engine rated at 420 PS (414 hp / 309 kW), which had the largest displacement in the entire 718 family.
It seems that the rest of Cayman and Boxster modifications will continue to be available, including the high-end GT4 RS spec with a four-liter engine and 500 PS (493 hp / 368 kW) under its command. The coupe zaps from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds and is essentially a full-fledged racecar that happens to be street-legal.
As for the reason for the discontinuation, we are told that the company is freeing up resources for EV production. When the first Porsche 718 EVs come out in a few years, they will inevitably draw some customers away from the current generation. Porsche did say it would continue making petrol-powered two-door cars even after the EVs go on sale, but the diversity will be smaller.
