Like The First Time: Porsche recreates the 356 “No. 1” Roadster from 1948

No one is safe from nostalgia, and the luxury car maker Porsche is no exception. The company has taken great pains to recreate its famous 356 “No. 1” roadster prototype dating all the way back to 1948 using some of the original blueprints, retro photos, and 3D scanning tech.

The Porsche Museum team began by preparing some design sketches, then ran a complete 3D scan of the actual roadster to get an approximate shape of the car body, and finally perfected the 3D mesh based on the archived photos and newspaper entries. It also took paint samples from the original “No. 1” to ensure 100% color match.

On the exterior of the life-sized foam replica of the vehicle, however, quite a few things appear a bit off. For instance, the headlights look slightly different, the radiator grille has lost some of its unique charm, and the rear part is no longer as narrow as in the original car.

Despite these inaccuracies, the model has received quite a bit of praise from Porsche fans. Lacking the engine and most of the crucial drivetrain components, it hasn’t been built for the roads, but no one seems to mind much.

Jaguar is another car manufacturer who likes to recreate its retro vehicles. The British company has recently revealed a replica of the XKSS sports car featuring a hand-crafted body and the entire interior trimming completely true to the original specifications.
