Porsche celebrates 20 years of the 911 GT3

Porsche celebrates another milestone: 20 years from the launch of the original 911 GT3. The German luxury carmaker unveiled it at the 1999 Geneva International Motor Show, positioning it as the successor to the legendary 911 Carrera RS 2.7 dating back to the 1970s.

The first GT3 came powered by a 3.6-liter, naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine rated at 360 hp (268 kW). It utilized a six-speed manual transmission to deliver the power to the rear axle. Compared to its contemporaries, the vehicle sported a particularly aggressive aerodynamic kit and had a lightweight body with superb agility. It completed a Nürburgring run in under eight minutes.

Three generations followed, each with its own facelift. The latest one – the 991.2 GT3 – came out two years ago and is still available in a 500-hp (373-kW) racecar version with manual transmission.

Judging by multiple sets of spy photos depicting a Porsche test mule in the 992 body, the next GT3 should be right around the corner. Chances are good that it will premiere at the upcoming International Motor Show Germany 2019.
