Porsche 911 Turbo debuts with almost the same specs as Turbo S

The Porsche 911.992 family has gained a new member: the “just Turbo”. The newcomer may be less powerful on paper than the latest Turbo S, but it is just about as fast.

The 3.8-liter opposite-six engine the non-S Turbo comes equipped with generates 580 hp (433 kW) and 700 Nm (616 lb-ft) of torque, which is a fair bit less than the 650 hp (485 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of the S version. However, it still hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in mere 2.8 seconds, with the S being only one-tenth of a second faster than that. The convertible catches up to the coupe pretty well with its 2.9 seconds’ sprint time. Both have their top speed capped at 320 km/h (199 mph), while the S is marginally faster at 330 km/h (205 mph).

The one area where the Turbo lags behind the flagship is the brakes. The Turbo S ships with carbon-ceramic brakes in its main spec, while the Turbo gets regular 408mm (16”) discs for the front axle and 380mm (14.8”) ones for the rear axle. That said, carbon-ceramic is still there as a paid option.

The pricing has only been announced for the United States so far. The Turbo coupe starts from U.S. $170,800, while the convertible will set you back $183,600 or more. The Porsche 911 Turbo S packs a $203,500 starting price tag. Pre-ordering is already available, but shipments won’t begin until early 2021.
