Unlike many, Gunther Werks isn’t interested in making garage queens – the talented tuner takes old Porsches and turns them into perfectly drivable modern sports cars capable of enviable acceleration. This 993 Coupe is a brilliant example.

The restomod relies on a 4.0-liter flat-six engine to propel it forward with 437 PS (431 hp / 321 kW) and 423 Nm (312 lb-ft) of torque. The peak rev count lies as high up as 8,100 RPM, and the sound it produces when pushed to its limits is nothing short of epic.

Piloted by Randy Pobst at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, California, the racer lapped up the entire course in 1 minute 30.99 seconds, marking a new record in its category. It also came barely one-third of a second behind the ultra-modern, ultra-expensive McLaren P1 (1:30.71).

Gunther Werks emphasized that it had the carbon body of the car to thank for the record – its curb weight barely reaches 2,500 lbs (1,133) kg.
