CarWOW has decided to see how the latest Porsche 911 Turbo S (gen.992) would fare against its older sibling, the Porsche 911 Turbo S (911.2). The outcome was rather surprising.
Both coupes come equipped with the same twin-turbo flat-six engines, as well as similar PDK transmissions and AWD systems. Both support gear preselection and launch control, but there are differences elsewhere.
The new generation uses a 3.75-liter engine rated at 650 PS (641 hp / 478 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. It has an eight-speed PDK transmission, weighs 1,640 kilos (3,615 lbs) and starts from £156,000 in the UK.
The older one has a marginally larger displacement of 3.8 liters, but makes do with a seven-speed gearbox. The output is a bit lower at 580 PS (572 hp / 427 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque. To compensate for this, the car weighs around 40 kg (88 lbs) less than its successor and starts from £147,000.
In the video, the new 911 (992) beats its predecessor at a standing-start quarter-mile run, but loses to it in the next race due to slower switching.
