Flat-nosed Porsche 930 gets dialed up to 650 PS, then back down to 400

The right-hand-drive Porsche 911 (930) used to be available in a special version called Flachbau, which saw its front clip replaced with a different, flatter and smoother one for racing purposes. One such example got nabbed by a Speedhunters reporter, Stefan Kotze.

The coupe has been extensively modified from without and from within, helped by the fact that its current owner is a Porsche engineer. It ended up with a Porsche 993 racing rear wing, a front bumper borrowed from a 964 RS, and a rear apron taken from the same model. The 18-inch gold-tinted wheels in the arches also look like something that could come from a vintage Porsche racer, but they were actually ordered from BBS.

Powering the build is its standard 3.3-liter flat-six engine boosted from 325 to 400 metric horsepower. This necessitated replacing the camshafts with those used in the 964 Turbo, as well as upgrading the exhaust manifold, the turbo setup, the intercooler, the oil pump, and the software to govern it all. A five-speed RUF transmission conveys the momentum to the wheels.

According to the engineer, the car used to pump out 650 PS (641 hp / 478 kW) to the wheels and made 310 km/h (192 mph) in a straight line, but he decided to dial things down a bit for stability reasons.

The suspension now uses Bilstein shocks, while the brake calipers and rotors stem from a 993 Turbo. Rounding off the impressive project is a lightweight driver’s cockpit with a tubular half-cage and a pair of carbon-fiber Recaro bucket seats, among other similar mods.
