The Porsche 911 Dakar model introduced last month (featured in the gallery here) might eventually provide the basis for a full-fledged family of off-road-capable sports cars, CEO Oliver Blume said in a recent interview.
He pointed out that the present-day 911 lineup stood on two ‘whales’: track-focused GT modifications and limited knock-offs inspired by the famous vehicles of the past. He added that basic variations, from the Carrera to the Turbo S, were not special enough to warrant singling them out in a group of their own.
Blume let it slip that Porsche was working on two new 911 specials inspired by classics dating all the way back to the 1980s. Ultimately, he reckoned that the off-road Safari lineup could become something like the third ‘whale’ for the model, securing its long-term financial success.
He summed up saying the company was committed to expanding the 911 Dakar family further, but wanted to see how well the first entry would perform with the buyers before proceeding with the investment.
