A 30-year-old Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 with just 10 km (6.2 miles) under its belt will cross the auction block at the Yas Marina Raceway shortly before the Formula 1 Grand Prix start on November 25, 2023. As one out of only two street-legal RSR 3.8 models in existence, it is expected to sell for U.S. $2–2.5 million.
The seller calls this particular modification of the Porsche 911 (964) ‘the evolutionary pinnacle’ for the entire model line. Its racing version came based on the Carrera RS chassis and 3.6-liter engine. Back in the early 1990s, it scored numerous titles in GT racing events, including some famous 24-hour endurance marathons.
The RSR 3.8 variant received a widened Turbo-style body and an engine enlarged to 3.8 liters of displacement. The official power ratings lay in the range of 325-350 horsepower, but unofficial measurements suggested it was closer to 375 hp.
Around half a hundred RSR 3.8 models had been assembled before the 911 (964) went out of production. Only two were given the ‘Strassenversion’ (‘Street Version’) badge. The example on sale is allegedly the only one to have a fully trimmed interior with leather all around and a roll cage.
The title lists several owners, none of whom dared to use the car for its original purpose. There are even some factory wraps and covers left in certain places, the seller claims.
