Porsche 911 rally racer can be yours for ~$500k

A lesser-known Porsche 911 SC/RS homologation rally car from the 1980s is up for grabs in the USA right now. It comes from a series of just 21 examples, some of them street-legal, and is currently being auctioned off for $460,000 with a few days remaining.

Porsche based the SC/RS model on its latest 911 SC at the time, but the modifications were extensive. In particular, the entire body was redesigned from scratch with aluminum and glass-fiber panels all around, flared fenders and lightweight glass. The interior was stripped bare, and the engine bay received a lightweight 3.0-liter flat-six mill from the regular 911 SC. The company was already beginning the production of its iconic 911 Carrera with a larger 3.2-liter engine, but it needed to keep the rally car as agile as possible. As a result, the engineers have managed to shave off around 350 kilos (772 pounds) in total.

The 3.0-liter engine originally made 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW), but Porsche upped its output to 250 PS (247 hp / 184 kW) for the street-legal versions and to 280 PS (276 hp / 206 kW) for the rally cars. It came with a five-speed manual transmission and an LSD, and needed roughly five seconds to accelerate the car from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph). Tuned Bilstein shocks and performance brakes rounded off the list of technical modifications.

Only 20 examples were produced for the mass market. The final 21st car was stored in the Stuttgart company’s museum. The seller claims that their example was the last in the batch and made for a client from Switzerland. Van Dijk Racing had reportedly raced it on a number of occasions, but never scored any major successes. It was delivered painted in white with red decals on the sides and matching Fuchs wheels. In early 2024, the owner had the original graphics replaced with Rallye de France decals and the wheels repainted to match the rest of the body.

Trim-wise, the rally exotic has some optional lights installed all around, features a trip computer on board and has a functioning comm system. The odometer shows slightly more than 5,000 km (3,100 miles) of use.
