As you may know, a Porsche 911 GT2 RS lapped up the North Loop in 6 minutes 38.835 seconds last week, setting a new world record among production cars. Mercedes-AMG congratulated its rival, but made sure to sound sarcastic.
The new lap time beats that of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series by nearly five seconds, dethroning it after six months of leadership. However, the GT2 RS that hit the track was not a stock car in the strictest sense of the word. Among other things, it had a Manthey Racing package installed with some chassis and aerodynamic improvements. This is what drew the sarcasm from the AGM team.
Then again, the new tuning kit has already hit production, too, and you can already pre-order it from any Mercedes dealership, so the judging panel was probably right to consider the modified GT2 RS a ‘production car’ in the sense that you can obtain all the parts from the OEM. What do you think?
