Rumor: The upcoming Porsche 911 GT2 RS to be a mild hybrid

The first electrified modification of the legendary Porsche 911 will be a GT2 RS underpinned by mild-hybrid technology already used in some Le Mans racecars, anonymous reports claim.

The powertrain will allegedly include a turbocharged flat-six engine with 3.7 liters of displacement. The newest 911 Turbo S uses the same mill to get 650 PS (641 hp / 478 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. The specifications of the electric motor remain unknown.

According to the rumors, the new GT2 RS will surpass its previous generation (depicted below) in terms of both power and dynamic performance. The old version had 700 PS (690 hp / 515 kW) at its disposal and could sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 2.8 seconds before hitting its top speed of 340 km/h (211 mph).

The supercar will purportedly come with a modest-sized traction battery and no all-electric mode support. The battery pack function will be limited to assisting the main engine during acceleration and getting the power back through regenerative braking. It will allegedly sit behind the seats, resulting in a front-to-rear weight distribution ratio of 39:61. The gravity center will reportedly stay unchanged from the previous design.

The battery may benefit from an air cooling circuit driven by a dedicated electric compressor. Another turbine will reside in the exhaust system to generate electricity for the battery using the exhaust gas stream.
