The fully electric Porsche Cayman and Boxster are coming to the market in 2024, but those who need one here and now may consider this EV conversion of a 47-year-old Porsche 914 on sale from EV West (California).
The mid-engined sports car came equipped with four- and six-cylinder engines back when it was still produced, the flat-four being by far the most common option. It maxed out at two liters of displacement and just 95 PS (94 hp / 70 kW). The project car had its block removed and an HPEVS AC-50 motor put in its place.
Unlike in many other electrification projects, the five-speed manual transmission remains intact here and still drives the rear wheels. A lithium-ferro-phosphate battery rated at 36 kilowatt-hours of capacity provides the power and allegedly ensures a near-perfect 50/50 axle load balance.
The restomod doesn’t pretend it is the image of perfection, as both the exterior and the cabin show signs of wear in places. Furthermore, the new motor barely churns out 97 PS (99 hp / 72 kW), which can be less than exciting in a sports car. On the other hand, the conversion costs mere $8,734, plus whatever you can obtain the battery for. If you would rather grab the car shown here, make sure you contact EV West before the offer expires tomorrow, August 16, 2022.
