A low-mileage Porsche 918 Spyder and one of two finished in Gulf Oil colors in a production batch of 918 units (see video) is now heading to auction in the USA expected to bring home $2.5–3 million.
A Canadian Porsche fan ordered two nearly identical 918 Spyder vehicles with slightly different trim options nine years ago. Expecting his favorite company to satisfy his individual wishes, he asked for both cars to be finished in Gulf Oil colors. Porsche denied the request, explaining that the collaboration with that company was officially over.
The frustrated customer then contacted Gulf Oil directly with the same request. The company didn’t paint the car, but it did issue an official permit for Porsche to make an exception. Perhaps even more impressively, the Stuttgart company actually painted both cars instead of wrapping them in vinyl like it did with the rest of the Gulf Oil lineup.
The example seen here was also one out of roughly 230 Spyders to receive the full Weissach treatment. It included magnesium alloy wheels, lightweight brakes and other weight-reducing options. The buyer also opted for a Burmester audio system and a front-axle lift kit for driving over speed bumps.
The car on sale has put 605 km (376 miles) behind it since the production in 2015.
