Michael Steiner, Porsche Head of Research and Development, said a battery version of the Boxster EV had been in development for a while, with the first test vehicles already running.
The car will first debut as a concept, while the final production version will have to wait for an indefinite amount of time. Unlike the Macan, which makes do with Porsche’s PPE architecture, the roadster might get some kind of a new platform. Like the Cayman coupe, it might go on sale alongside its fuel-powered variants.
In an earlier statement, Michael Steiner admitted that the company was dissatisfied with the results of its attempted electrification of the 718 model line. He stressed that sports cars must be lightweight and agile, not weighed down by the still-too-heavy traction battery tech. The large-sized Taycan EV has it easier than compacts in this regard, but if an electric two-door Porsche compact is ever to come out, it will do so after the Macan EV and be as light as possible.
