A car enthusiast from the United States swapped the flat-six engine of his 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera for a V8 produced by GM. No rationale has been given for the makeover.
In its stock guise, the Carrera shipped with a 3.4-liter engine rated at 300 horsepower and its 3.6-liter counterpart capable of 320 hp. The talented technician managed to stuff a six-liter Pontiac G8 mill in its place, which normally maxes out at 367 hp. You may know the G8 as the Holden Commodore, a popular car in Australia.
He then proceeded to replace most of the internals, including the entire exhaust system and the control unit. He left the original Porsche brackets, mounts and radiator in place. The six-speed manual transmission was also allowed to stay, but it had to receive a torque adapter to fit.
No dyno measurements have been made post-conversion. The owner claims the engine churns out more than its OEM power rating. With over 150,000 km (93,000 miles) on the block, the engine is by no means new, but not exactly a write-off, either – GM V8s are known for their longevity. The rest of the car reportedly has a touch under 196,000 km (122,000 miles) on it.
