The range-topping Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 currently ship with six-speed manual transmission on board, but Porsche promises to make its PDK semi-auto gearbox available for both late this year.
Both sports cars debuted last summer with the same 4.0-liter straight-six engine under the hood (420 hp / 313 kW, 420 Nm / 310 lb-ft). Both sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in the same 4.4 seconds. At 304 km/h (189 mph) max, the Cayman is only marginally faster than the Boxster with its 301 km/h (187 mph).
Introduction of the in-house designed PDK transmission should improve acceleration times by 0.2 seconds, Porsche claims. The top speed will also rise.
Based on the recently published spy photos, Porsche is also working on a performance variant of its 718 Cayman coupe, likely to be labeled ‘RS’ in production.
