Wanna bet on what this mystery Porsche prototype could be?

A bizarre Porsche test car has recently cropped up on the North Loop, sporting a Cayman body and a different rear suspension arrangement along with wheel arches suggesting larger wheelbase and wheel span.

In theory, the German sports car maker might already be working on the next generation of its Cayman and Boxster models. Then again, the company has repeatedly said before it need another mid-engined model in the lineup, so it could as well be that.

Witnesses of the test car reported distinctly hearing its petrol engine revving, something that clashes with Porsche’s intention to electrify the entire 718 range by the year 2023. Supposing this is a Cayman, it will probably either keep the internal combustion engine in the next generation, or drop it once the tests of the new EV platform are finished.

On top of all this, it looks like the current-gen Cayman is underway to a facelift before it goes into a new generation. The range-topping GT4 RS model shown in the video might end up with the four-liter naturally aspirated engine of the 911 GT3, rated at 510 PS (503 hp / 375 kW) or so. Then again, this is pure speculation at this time, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves until we hear it from Porsche.
