Young Swiss enterprise by the name of Bcomp has already attracted nearly $35 million USD worth of investments from venture funds and international automakers.
The company researches and produces composite materials useful, among other things, in the automotive industry. The materials are said to be lightweight and eco-friendly, and once past service life they can be recycled or even burned without producing any harmful emissions.
Using natural fiber ensures that the bioplastic panels weigh only a half of what common plastics weigh. The company admits that this regular plastic is still present in the mix, but there is 70% less of it than usual. Producing it also generates 62% less CO2 than usual.
Porsche and BMW have been working together with Bcomp for three years now. Its composite materials have found its way into the Porsche Cayman 718 GT4 CS MR, the Misson R Concept and various Formula E racecars, as well as the BMW M4 GT. Volvo is planning on using these materials for inner paneling of its upcoming Polestar 5 EV.
