Porsche has unveiled another special edition of its Cayman GT4 coupe in Japan, which the company’s Exclusive Manufaktur division designed based on the Porsche 906 supercar that used to reign supreme on the country’s racing courses in the late 1960s.
The example shown during the presentation event will remain the property of its makers, but a similar special edition will soon be launched based on the standard Cayman GT4.
The car wears a reproduction of the original Porsche 906 Carrera 6 livery with its numerous orange accents and starting number 8. Piloted by Tetsu Ikuzawa at Fuji Speedway 55 years ago, the supercar won the race.
A closer look at the design reveals that it also references the outlines of the original racecar, its chassis number (145), the outlines of the racing course and the best lap time. The interior is draped in black leather and Alcantara with red accents.
During the reveal event, Porsche Japan showed the new coupe next to an archived video from the historic race.
Pricing remains to be announced, and it doesn’t look like the model will ever go on sale outside of Japan.
The Porsche 718 Cayman got its first GT4 modification three years ago. Powered by a 4.0-liter flat-six engine, it was the strongest Cayman model in history at the time, needing only 4.4 seconds for its 0-100 km/h sprint.
