Next Porsche Macan to go all-electric

The Board of Directors of Porsche AG has decided to switch the Macan SUV to an all-electric powertrain starting with its next generation. The updated model won’t arrive until at least 2020.

The company plans to assemble the new generation on the PPE platform of the current Taycan. The platform uses a mixture of composite materials, aluminum and steel, and comes with an integrated 800V charging circuit, as well as a traction battery module.

In a previous statement, the German luxury car maker said it would be investing over €6 billion in the electric vehicle R&D and production, making sure that at least 50% cars in its overall lineup are electric by 2025. True to this new strategy, Porsche dropped its earlier plans to release diesel versions of the Macan and Panamera, and redirected the money from those projects into its EV segment.

The all-electric Porsche Macan will be assembled in Leipzig, Germany.
