Porsche completes its Leipzig factory, gets ready to produce Macan EV

Porsche has finished constructing a new production facility in Leipzig, Germany, where it intends to assemble the next – electric – generation of its Macan SUV. The ongoing pandemic prevented celebrations originally planned for its completion.

The German sports car maker first mentioned the Macan EV a year ago. The car comes based on the PPE platform co-designed by Porsche and Audi and packs as many as four motors. The actual production won’t begin until late 2021 at least, and the sales will likely only start in early 2022. The current-gen Macan received its latest facelift two years ago (look into our gallery for details).

Despite its commitment to electrification, Porsche says it will continue producing internal combustion engines “as long as technically possible”. Manual gear switching will also continue to be available for a while. However, sooner or later the entire lineup will be electrified.
