Mark Webber, an ex-F1 racer and World Endurance Championship winner currently holding the position of Porsche Brand Ambassador, has taken Mission E, company’s first-ever all-electric vehicle, for a test ride a video of which is now available on the Porsche official website.
Mission E is a concept vehicle which will eventually kick off a series of environment-friendly, fully electric cars. The name is provisional and may change until the premiere, though.
Webber chose the test circuit in Weissach, Germany to push Mission E to its limits – and maybe then some. After the ride, he said that the cockpit and the field of view reminded him of those of the 918 Spyder. In contrast, he reported its acceleration and steering performance as being closer to those of the track-only Porsche 919 Hybrid racecar. He used to pilot the latter back in his endurance racing days.
The original Porsche Mission E debuted at the Paris International Motor Show in France in 2016. The car came equipped with two battery arrays and two engines (one per axle). Their summary performance exceeded 600 hp (447 kW), and the car could reportedly cover a distance of up to 500 kilometers (310 miles) prior to needing another charging.
Preliminary estimates place the start of series production in 2019, with vehicles priced at €90,000 and above when they reach the market.
