Ram has taken the wraps off of the fifth generation of its Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickup trucks at the ongoing Detroit Motor Show in the USA.
Both cars share the same cab design with the current Ram 1500, but have one prominent feature that sets them apart from the previous generations. for the first time in 25 years, the front part of the cab isn’t cascaded, and the fenders no longer have that standalone, detached-from-cab look.
Both Heavy Duty series pickups now take advantage of a new stainless steel framework. Both will primarily ship with a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 gasoline engine good for 410 hp (306 kW) and 581 Nm (429 pound-feet) of torque, linked to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Further options include two diesels rated at 370 hp (275 kW) and 400 hp (300 kW) and a hi-end 6.7-liter V6 diesel capable of hitting a stellar 1,356 Nm (1,000 pound-feet) of torque.
You can order your Ram 2500 or Ram 3500 truck with either a rear drive or an AWD. Regardless of your choice, you’ll take advantage of improved suspension featuring progressively-wound springs and FRD shock absorbers for what the manufacturer claims to be a sports car-like steering experience. The only notable difference comes in the form of the rear suspension design: unlike the 2500, the 3500 features a spring-supported rear bridge. Both models can be ordered with optional pressurized air tanks enabling you to lower the truck closer to the ground for easier loading and unloading.
Starting this year, the Heavy Duty Family also incorporates a new special trim called Power Wagon. Designed for rugged off-road use, it comes with a suspension lift, roll bars that can be uncoupled, diff locks and a winch.
As far as driving safety is concerned, the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 both offer such features as the automatic emergency brake feature, 360-degree camera view system, and tire pressure control that also works for the trailer attachment.
