Japanese carmaker Aspark plans to set new Nürburgring record

Japanese car manufacturer Aspark has announced earlier today that it was going to challenge the standing North Loop record among all-electric vehicles. To that end, the company has been designing an all-new hypercar called Owl, reportedly capable of sprinting 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 1.9 seconds.

As you may remember, the initial Aspark Owl Concept debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany two years ago. The sports coupe was only 99 centimeters (3 ¼ ft.) tall and weighed in at a mere 850 kilograms (1,875 lb.). It came powered with two electric motors jointly capable of producing 435 hp (324 kW) and 764 Nm (563 lbft) of torque.

A year after the premiere, the manufacturer has revised the tech specifications of the vehicle, most notably giving it four electric motors instead of just two. As a result, the performance of the Owl rose to an impressive 1,166 hp (870 kW) and 885 Nm (653 lbft) of torque.

The current lap record on the Nürburging Circuit, Germany belongs to the Chinese all-electric hypercar Nio EP9. Armed with a powertrain churning out 1,360 horsepower (1,014 kilowatts), the vehicle has finished the entire North Loop in 6 minutes 45.9 seconds.

Of course, Aspark isn’t alone in its ambitions to best the EP9. For instance, Volkswagen AG has recently made a similar claim.
