Renault 5 drops disguise well ahead of next year’s premiere

The all-electric Renault 5 hatchback will not be officially introduced until February 26, 2024, but its patent shots have already leaked online, so let’s take a closer look.

Advertised as one of Europe’s cheapest electric cars, the new Renault 5 resembles its namesake from the 1970s, but the much larger wheels and LED lighting all around dispel the illusion.

The side mirrors and the door handles look normal. The lower body and the fenders are offset in black, but do not evoke any associations with crossovers. Speaking of interesting and original features, the side windows sport red bezels and the rear doors have concealed handles.

When the Renault 5 debuts, it will first go on sale with a larger 52-kWh traction battery and roughly 400 km (248 miles) of range. A cheaper 40-kWh variant will be added later. The rest of the specifications will be announced in February.

Since the EV runs on the CMF-BEV platform, it is expected to be under 4 meters (13.1 feet) long. The new architecture is roughly 70% unified with the popular ICE car chassis known as the CMF-B. The only electric motor it provides for sits at the front axle.

Prices are expected to start around €25,000.
