Souped-up Renault Megane takes Spa-Francorchamps gold

A modded Renault Megane RS Trophy-R armed with a 300-hp (224-kW) turbo engine has just set a new record time on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, beating Honda’s Civic Type R by more than five seconds.

Piloted by Renault’s professional test driver Laurent Hurgon, the five-door hatchback crossed the finish line in 2 minutes 48.338 seconds, setting a new high score in the FWD Vehicles category.

Commenting on the race, the pilot said that, while the Spa-Francorchamps circuit is extremely fast and challenging, the car is a perfect match for it. He also praised its aerodynamics and said the cornering performance was magnificent.

This is the second record the Megane sets this year. In May, the car scored a similar victory at the Nürburgring. That said, it has a long way to go still, many countries to visit and many tracks to complete.
